The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal was the first shore power system for cruise ships installed on the East Coast of the United States and remains the only shore power capable terminal on the East Coast. This NYC cruise terminal has 3 wharves – Pier 88 (2 berths), Pier 90 (2 berths), and Pier 92 (1 overflow berth). They can accommodate up to 5 cruise liners simultaneously and each has a fully-functioning passenger terminal building. Manhattan terminal serves NCL Norwegian, Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America.

Once at the Manhattan cruise port, the driver can either drop you off across the street or drive up the ramp to the second level (the entrance to the second level is on 55th Street). Check-in is on the second level, so you'll need to take the elevator or the escalator. Cruisers departing from the Manhattan cruise port can fly into New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport or LaGuardia Airport, or into New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport. Shuttles, taxis and public transport are available at all airports; Uber and Lyft also operate at JFK and LaGuardia.
Getting from JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Airports to Manhattan Cruise Terminal
US Customs and Border Protection and US Immigration and Customs agencies regulate international shipping imports and cruise passenger arrivals. There can be heavy traffic into the city from Queens and Brooklyn. So, depending on the time you’re traveling, taking the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) from JFK to New York’s Penn Station and then a 10-minute cab ride to the Manhattan cruise port may be faster. All these ports/cruise terminals are part of the "Port of New York and New Jersey" - a port district in the New York Metro (total population 20,1+ million). New York City’s world-class cruise ship ports in both Brooklyn and Manhattan offer ideal facilities for cruise arrivals and departures.

If you're being picked up by a private car, you'll need to go up one level to the pick-up/drop-off zone. Elevators to access the Customs Hall are located at the head of each pier. Amtrak offers service to New York City along the Northeast Corridor from Boston, Providence, Hartford, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. From Penn Station, you'll need to take a taxi to get to the Manhattan port.

In 2018, Brooklyn served 143,030 passengers with 28 ship calls and Manhattan served 1,154,987 passengers with 207 ship calls. With increasing numbers of ship calls and enhancements in easing the passenger flow to ground transportation, the terminals are opening eyes as travelers disembark for their visit to New York City. Opened in April 2006, the state-of-the-art Brooklyn Cruise Terminal has received numerous accolades, including “Cruise Terminal of the Year” by Princess Cruise Lines and “Best New Homeport” by PortHole Magazine. Dedicated embarkation and debarkation areas allow passengers to get on the ship without waiting. In its first year of operation, the 182,000-square-foot Brooklyn Cruise Terminal welcomed 40 ships and added 330 new permanent jobs to the Brooklyn waterfront.
Payment is due upon arrival into the parking lot and reservations are not accepted. There's also plenty of parking available at independent garages all throughout the west side of Manhattan. Take the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and go west on 34th St until you reach 12th Ave. In October 2014, RCCL-Royal Caribbean and NYC Port Authority dedicated a Cape Liberty cruise terminal for the RCI's ship Quantum OTS.
As of September 2016, NYCEDC has responsibility for the system's operations and maintenance. Port's foreign trade zones - FTZ 1 (New York) and FTZ 49 (New Jersey) handled in 2010 a combined shipping traffic of 4811 vessels and over 32,2 million tons of cargoes valued USD 175+ billion. Significant investment led to the creation of the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and the renovation of the Manhattan Cruise Terminal at Pier 88 and Pier 90. A key enhancement included the redesign of Pier 88 passenger flow, with travelers now embarking only through the main level, and disembarking only through the ground level. The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is constantly being upgraded and improved. Follow our social media and blog for the latest cruise and travel news, including our best vacation deals.
Connecting to Con Edison power grid, the shorepower system allows ships to run their onboard systems without using diesel generators. This eliminates ~1500 tons of CO2, ~95 tons of NOx, and ~6,5 tons of soot/particulate matter annually. Within the seaport there are 2 FTZs (foreign-trade zones) where commercial goods (domestic and foreign) receive same Customs treatment as outside USA.
Costs were ~USD 10 million (to service one slip) and involve substantial infrastructure improvements. Ship operators must spend ~USD 1 million to make a vessel shorepower-ready. A typical container ship in port uses about as much energy as a single terminal at Boston’s Logan Airport, while RMS Queen Mary 2 requires 13 megawatts (equal to the entire airport).
In 2014, the total number of handled intermodal TEUs was 391,596. Petroleum and scrap metals are handled at bulk cargo terminals, many of which are located along the port's straits and canals. NYCruise brings the most spectacular—often the biggest and most luxurious passenger ships to our terminals in Red Hook, Brooklyn and the West Side of Manhattan from European origins or distant ports in the Americas.

Welcome to New York City’s world-class cruise ship terminals in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Port Cape Liberty is in close proximity to EWR-Newark Liberty Airport (10 mi / 16 km to the west, ~20-min travel time by car) and easy to access, skipping NYC's heavy traffic and bridges. The Manhattan passenger terminal is on Hudson River (on Manhattan Island's shoreline), located is between West 44 and West 52 streets.
Each terminal is easily accessible from all NYC airports and from the area’s major roadways. Note that passengers will not be able to drop off luggage at the Manhattan cruise terminal before parking their vehicle, as they’ll have to exit the terminal to park. There are two cruise piers at Manhattan Port (Pier 88 at 48th Street and Pier 90 at 52nd Street). When only one cruise ship is in port, it will embark or disembark from Pier 90. Check in for both piers is on Level Two of the Manhattan cruise terminal; there is only one entrance for each.
